Start with water
Water is the everyday starting point. Fluid needs change with heat, activity, illness and individual circumstances. A refillable bottle can make drinking more convenient; buying an electrolyte powder is not necessary for every ordinary workout or desk day.

Electrolyte products replace minerals lost in body fluids. Sports drinks may also supply carbohydrate for exercise. An oral rehydration product for illness has a different purpose from a sports drink; they should not be treated as interchangeable. A pharmacist can help with illness-related rehydration.

Read the water volume and serving directions on the actual package. Do not make it extra concentrated or assume one brand's scoop matches another. Check sodium, sugar and other ingredients against your needs. People with fluid or salt restrictions should follow their clinician's advice rather than a general drinking target.
