Start with the finish you want

Do you want a finishing oil for your lengths, a leave-in step after washing, or a product labelled for use before heat styling? Start there. Product names overlap, so compare the instructions and intended use rather than assuming every serum or oil works the same way. Check whether yours goes on damp or dry hair.

Keep heat protection a separate question

If you use hot tools, look for an explicit heat-protection claim on that exact product. An oil's name alone does not establish heat protection. Follow its application instructions and keep tools on a suitable low or medium setting. Excessive heat can damage hair even when a styling product is part of the routine.

Keep the routine manageable

Check the suggested amount and work from there; pack sizes and pump sizes vary. Notice whether the texture suits your hair before adding another layer. A product that makes hair feel coated may not suit the finish you want. You can also reduce handling damage by detangling gently and choosing styles that do not pull.
