Decide: desk walking or standalone exercise
A slim walking pad is usually designed for lower-speed walking and may have no fixed handrail. A treadmill intended for faster sessions may add a handrail, larger deck and higher speed. Decide which activity you actually plan to do. For desk walking, use a pace that lets you stay balanced and attentive, and do not run on a model unless its manufacturer explicitly says it is designed for running.

Check the full floor length and width, the space beneath your desk, safe clearance behind the belt, and the folded or stored dimensions. Also check the machine's weight and the route from delivery point to its final room. Some models fold through the centre—the WalkingPad M2 is one current example—but folding design and dimensions vary, so verify the exact listing rather than assuming every walking pad stores the same way.

Compare usable belt length and width, the rated user capacity, starting speed and maximum speed. Leave sensible room below the stated capacity and check whether the model includes a handrail, emergency stop or safety key. Motor horsepower by itself does not prove that a machine will feel stable, suit your stride or last longer.
Plan for noise, flooring and maintenance
Noise comes from both the motor and your footsteps. Think about calls, neighbours and the floor below; a suitable mat may protect flooring and reduce some vibration, but it cannot guarantee silence. Read the manual for belt alignment, lubrication and cleaning, and check who provides the Australian warranty, replacement parts and service.
Treat safety information as part of the purchase
Treadmills sold in Australia are subject to mandatory safety labelling requirements. Check the exact Australian listing and manual, keep children and pets away from the moving belt, wear suitable footwear, and use the safety key when the model has one. Stop if you feel dizzy, unwell or in pain.

For gentle desk walking, prioritise a usable belt, controllable low speed and a layout that does not compromise balance. For faster walking, jogging or anyone who wants more support, a model with a suitable handrail and larger deck may be the better fit. An outdoor walk remains the free option; a walking pad earns its space only when it removes a barrier you regularly face.
