How to choose an air fryer you’ll actually use

Size the basket to your usual meal, not the biggest dinner you might cook once a year.

The useful air fryer is the one that fits your normal meal, your bench and your cleanup tolerance. Capacity numbers help, but drawer shape and the way you cook matter just as much.

Start with your normal dinner

A compact single drawer is often enough for one or two people and is easier to lift, store and clean. A larger basket earns its footprint when you regularly cook for several people or want leftovers.

Do not size the appliance around an occasional party. Large machines occupy the bench every day, even when you are cooking one serve.

Single or dual drawer?

A single drawer gives you more uninterrupted cooking space and fewer parts to wash. Two drawers help when the meal has different temperatures or finish times, but each compartment may be narrower than expected.

Before buying, picture the foods you cook together. Two small zones are useful for protein plus vegetables; one wider basket is often better for a whole ingredient.

Check the real footprint

Measure width and depth with clearance for ventilation. Also check the space needed to pull the basket out. A model can fit the bench but still block a splashback, cupboard door or walkway during use.

Features worth paying for

Prioritise an easy-to-read control panel, dishwasher-safe parts if that matters to you, and a temperature range suited to your cooking. App control and a long preset list are optional conveniences, not proof of better food.
